Microsoft Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL to Launch in India by December: Nadella

Microsoft Lumia 950
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella at the company's Future Unleashed event in Mumbai on Thursday announced that the firm's latest flagship smartphones, the Windows 10 Mobile-based Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, will arrive in India by December.

The Microsoft Lumia 950 and Microsoft Lumia 950 XL were launched globally at the company's Windows 10 Devices event in October, and are due to hit launch markets in November. As noted the same month, the dual SIM variants of the smartphones are expected to launch in India, with the Microsoft India store already listing the smartphone as 'coming soon'. The Microsoft Lumia 550 budget Windows 10 Mobile smartphone was also launched alongside, but only due in launch markets in December. At the moment, there is no news about the Lumia 550's release date in India.

The Lumia 950 starts from $549 (roughly Rs. 35,800) in the US, while the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL starts from $649 (roughly Rs. 42,300). The Lumia 550 on the other hand was priced at $139 (roughly Rs. 9,100) in the US.

The Microsoft Lumia 950 Dual SIM sports a 5.2-inch QHD display with a pixel density of 564ppi. It is powered by a 1.8GHz hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC and 3GB of RAM. It comes with 32GB of inbuilt storage that's expandable via microSD card (up to 200GB).

The Microsoft Lumia 950 XL Dual SIM, on the other hand, sports a 5.7-inch QHD display with a pixel density of 518ppi. It is powered by a 2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC and 3GB of RAM. It also comes with 32GB of inbuilt storage that's expandable via microSD card (up to 200GB).

Both the handsets come equipped with a 20-megapixel rear camera with 4K video recording, OIS, and an f/1.9 aperture, apart from a 5-megapixel sensor placed upfront with an f/2.4 aperture and full-HD video recording. The rear camera module features a triple-LED RGB flash module, and the phones feature dedicated camera buttons. They are the first Lumia handsets to run Microsoft's new mobile operating system, Windows 10 Mobile. Both handsets are also liquid cooled.

The Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL come with adaptive antenna technology. The company says that this makes it possible for the device to give users the best reception no matter how they pick it up.

The phones also feature USB Type-C port (USB 3.1), which Microsoft says with the inbuilt fast charging can charge 50 percent of the battery in just 30 minutes. Both phones also feature removable batteries, and built-in wireless charging.

As for software features, both Lumia 950 and 950 XL support Windows Hello biometric system that unlocks the device by just looking at your face. But the biggest deal was Windows 10 Continuum. Using a Microsoft Display Dock - which comes with an HDMI port, DisplayPort, and three USB ports - you can connect your phone to a monitor and use it with a Windows 10-like PC interface.

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL LTE
Microsoft has launched the Lumia 640 XL LTE Dual SIM in India at Rs. 17,399. The smartphone was first unveiled at MWC 2015, but was not launched in India alongside the Lumia 640 Dual SIM and Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM in April.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL LTE Dual SIM is identical to the Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM, except that it features 4G LTE connectivity in addition, with support for Indian 4G LTE bands. It will be upgradeable to Windows 10 Mobile when it is released later this year. The company is also touting a bundled SIM offer with Bharti Airtel, which includes the Airtel Double Data offer.

The Lumia 640 XL LTE Dual SIM bears a large 5.7-inch HD (720x1280 pixels) IPS LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, and is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2GHz coupled with 1GB of RAM.

The new 4G LTE smartphone from Microsoft sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with Zeiss optics and a 5-megapixel front camera. The Lumia 640 XL LTE Dual SIM also packs a replaceable 3000mAh battery that is rated to deliver up to 30.3 hours of talk-time on 2G, and 37 days of standby time.

Microsoft Lumia 550 With 4.7-Inch Display, Windows 10 Mobile Launched

Microsoft Lumia 550 front
The Microsoft Lumia 550 budget 4G smartphone, leaked extensively ahead of the event, finally launched on Tuesday. The budget Windows 10 smartphone was introduced alongside the flagship models - Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, the Microsoft Band 2, the Surface Pro 4, and the Surface Book at the Windows 10 Devices briefing event. The smartphone is due in December at $139 (roughly Rs. 9,100).
The Microsoft Lumia 550 sports a 4.7-inch HD display (720x1280 pixels) resolution with a pixel density of 315ppi. It is powered by a 1.1GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 SoC, Adreno 304 GPU and 1GB of RAM. It comes with 8GB of inbuilt storage that's expandable via microSD card (up to 200GB).
The handset comes equipped with a 5-megapixel autofocus rear camera with HD video recording, LED flash, and an f/2.4 aperture, apart from a 2-megapixel sensor placed upfront with an f/2.8 aperture and 480p video recording. The rear camera of Lumia 550 hosts features such as auto/manual exposure, geotagging, and touch focus.
The smartphone, unlike the high-end Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, features a Micro-USB port instead of USB Type-C. Some of the wireless connectivity options included in the 4G LTE-enabled Microsoft Lumia 550 are Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with hotspot functionality, FM radio, and A-GPS. It comes backed by a replaceable 2100mAh battery, which as per Microsoft delivers up to 28 days of standby time, 16 hours of talk time in 2G, 14 hours in 3G, and 17 hours in 4G. Also housed on board are an ambient light sensor, accelerometer and proximity sensors.
Microsoft Lumia 550
Needless to say, since the Microsoft Lumia 550 is one of the company's first smartphones to run the latest Windows 10 Mobile OS version, it features the new Microsoft Edge browser, revamped Outlook mail, OneDrive, Microsoft Office, Cortana digital voice assistant, and Glance Screen, which lets users see notifications without fully unlocking the smartphone.
Design-wise the Lumia 550 falls in line with most of the previously launched budget Microsoft Lumia handsets. The model features a lock button and volume buttons on the right side, headphone jack at top, and a speaker at the lower back panel corner. Measuring 136.1x67.8x9.9mm, the model would be available in Black and White colour variants. Like the Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 950, it features the new Windows logo on the rear panel for branding.

Select Lumia Devices in India Reportedly Getting Update That Enables 4G Connectivity

Microsoft Lumia 640
Microsoft India has reportedly started rolling out an OTA (over-the-air) update for select Lumia handsets that enables 4G connectivity option on these devices.
According to a report by WM Poweruser, Microsoft is rolling out an update for theLumia 1520, Lumia 1320, Lumia 930, Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 830, and Lumia 625 smartphones. After receiving the OTA update, smartphone users will get another mobile data setting for 4G, apart from 2G (GSM) and 3G (WCDMA) settings that existed already.
The report however claims that the due to hardware limitation, these handsets will only support FDD-LTE (1800 MHz) band and not TDD-LTE (2300MHz) that's used by Airtel for its 4G network. The update doesn't seem to bring any other new features.
Last month, a WSJ report claimed that Microsoft will launch high-end Windows 10 Mobile smartphones in India later this year. The report citing a Microsoft India executive suggested the company's plan to launch top-end smartphones running Windows 10 Mobile this year. To recall, Microsoft India this year has mainly focused on budget segment in the country. The company primarily launched sub-Rs. 10,000 smartphones in the Indian market in an attempt to aggressively strengthen its budget offerings.
Soon after announcing restructuring plans for its phone business, Microsoft had confirmed that it would announce "premium Lumias designed for Windows 10" soon.
Preliminary leaks have suggested that Microsoft is working on two high-end Lumia handsets codenamed 'Cityman' and 'Talkman', both the smartphones are said to be targeted at the premium segment.

Microsoft Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM Review: Bigger Isn't Always Better

Not too long ago, big-screen phones were called phablets, indicating their in-between status between the phones and tablets.
Almost no one uses that term anymore, with large-screen smartphones now being known as, well, phones. Apple was pretty much the last one to acknowledge this trend, but last year's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were lapped up in record numbers, indicating an almost insatiable consumer appetite for big-screen phones.Earlier, Microsoft Devices - then Nokia - had forayed into the world of large phones with the Lumia 1320 and Lumia 1520. While the 1520 was a flagship-class device, the 1320 was relatively modest in terms of specifications. The Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM - announced at MWC alongside the Lumia 640 Dual SIM and other variants - is in many ways a successor to the 1320, though the company stopped short of officially positioning it as such.
Does the 640 XL pack in enough features and value to worry its Android brethren? Let's find out.
Design and display
The 640 XL Dual SIM is a quintessential Lumia - solidly built using good quality plastic, with a variety of colour options to choose from. It makes no effort to stand out in any way, and strange as that may sound, that's not necessarily a bad thing in our opinion.
The Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM comes with a 5.7-inch 720p display. While the display has no issues when it comes to colour reproduction or viewing angles, the pixel density leaves a lot to be desired. This isn't noticeable while you are looking at live tiles or viewing pictures, but as soon as you start reading text, pixelation issues come to the fore.
Microsoft Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM
Microsoft's decision to use a 720p screen in a bid to keep the costs down is understandable, but on a 5.7-inch display, is perhaps a step too far. We'd highlighted similar concerns in our Lumia 1320 review, so nothing seems to have changed on that front.
The pixelation problem wouldn't have been as bad if Microsoft had stuck to a 5-inch display; that would've certainly helped with our other complaint with the device - the top part of the screen is simply too hard to reach comfortably while using the phone with one hand.
We've all become used to large-screen phones, most companies seem to have settled on 5.5-inch as the upper limit, though there have of course been outliers like the Google Nexus 6. The 5.7-inch display is actually smaller than the one of the Lumia 1520 and the 1320, but the phone still feels too bulky for day-to-day use.
Software
Lumia 640 XL runs Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 out of the box, which includes all the features of the Lumia Denim update with some other enhancements. These new features include improvements to the Settings app, where you can get to any setting quickly by using the in-app search. You can also pin frequently-used individual settings (such as Wi-Fi) to your home screen as a live tile. Simply tap and hold down any setting and you'll see the pin to start option.
Microsoft Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM
Settings now also include app permissions that lets you control which apps have access to your Camera, Microphone, as well as Contacts, Messaging, and Calendar data.
The Lumia 640 XL comes preloaded with a host of Lumia-branded apps like Lumia Beamer, Lumia Camera, Lumia Cinemagraph, Lumia Creative Studio, Lumia Moments, Lumia Selfie, and Lumia Storyteller. Pre-installed third-party apps include BBM, BookMyShow, Facebook, Fitbit, Foodpanda, MobiKwik, NDTV, Olacabs, and WeChat. Thankfully, you can uninstall these apps should you so desire.
Unfortunately, there are no software tweaks that make use of the additional real estate - not even a token Reachability-like tweak seen on the newer, bigger iPhone models - and certainly nothing like Android's floating apps that put the increased screen space to great use. Having said that, most Android phones in this price range also suffer from the same faults, so it would be unfair to single Microsoft out on this point. The Lumia 640 XL will be upgradable to Windows 10, and this is one area where Microsoft certainly scores over the Android world.
All UI elements are simply scaled up to the new size, which means there are other annoyances like increased space between rows of keys on the keyboard, which takes some getting used to.
Camera
Outdoors and in good lighting conditions, the 13-megapixel Lumia 640 XL camera captures decent details, though the images tend to be just a little-bit over-exposed with some amount of noise. Noise is more of an issue in low-light conditions, but overall the camera does a pretty decent job in terms of managing light and maintaining image quality. The flash does a decent job of lighting up the subjects evenly.
Microsoft Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM
The camera captures high-quality full-HD video with good audio clarity. The front camera is perfect for good quality selfies, even in low-light conditions.
Performance and battery life
The Lumia 640 XL comes with a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 SoC with 1GB RAM. In synthetic benchmarks, the phone comes nowhere near Android phones that are now available at a similar price, but with Windows Phone's ability to play nice with limited resources, users are unlikely to find the difference as dramatic. We experienced no touchscreen issues like those that marred the Lumia 535 Dual SIM.
The smartphone comes with 8GB of inbuilt storage, less than half of which is available to the end users, which means you'll need to factor in the purchase of a SD card should you wish to do anything useful with the 640 XL. The phone supports cards of up to 128GB capacity, and Windows Phone lets you install apps directly to the SD card, so this is not a huge downside other than the additional cost.
Microsoft Lumia 640 XL Dual SIM
The Lumia 640 XL comes with on-screen buttons for navigation, instead of physical buttons, which means navigating out of full-screen environments - like when you are viewing a picture or watching a movie - takes an additional swipe to first bring up the navigation buttons. This may not be a big deal for some, but we certainly wish Microsoft had gone with physical buttons instead.
The phone features a 3000mAh battery that will easily last a day-and-a-half of heavy usage. The call quality is good and the loudspeaker - situated at the back - is pretty decent for calls as well as your dose of entertainment. You can double tap the display to wake up, which means you don't need to reach for the power button every time.
Verdict
During pre-launch interactions, Microsoft said it is positioning the Lumia 640 XL against Samsung's Grand series of mid-range, large-screen devices; explicitly dismissing the challenge posed by the likes of Xiaomi, Micromax, and others in the same segment. The company seems to have missed that the Grand series no longer enjoys the mindshare it once did, and by pricing the phone at Rs. 15,799, Microsoft certainly fails to acknowledge the existence of the Xiaomi Redmi Note and Micromax's Yu Yureka, amongst others that offer similar specifications - and an ecosystem with a much bigger collection of apps - at nearly half the price.
Like nearly all Lumia phones, the Lumia 640 XL stands out for its battery life and camera performance, but overall it's hard to recommend this device to anyone given the options already available in the market.
